| It is normal, not all doctors do it however. It's also not done at all exams even if your regular doctor has done it before, doesn't mean they'll do it each time. | Doctors don't usually do a rectal exam unless you are having problems there or as part of a routine pap smear. There really isn't any prep you need to do. They will have you lay on your side usually, take a deep breath and bear down a little. The doctor will need you to relax the muscle as much as you reasonably can so it's easier for him to slip a llubricated and gloved finger into the rectum, and less painful for you. It won't be particularly comfortable, but that's all you have to do really. The doctor will want to be able to touch some stool so he can do a test for occult blood- blood you won't see as red, and can be present in tiny amounts that is only detectable chemically. He'll smear it on a card, add a drop of liquid and then look for a color change. If he sees it, then you will be in for more testing. If you are female, he'll see if he can feel the backside of the uterus and the ovary possibly, and the bladder. If you are male, he'll be feeling for the prostate and bladder. As I said, it's uncomfortable, but shouldn't be particularly painful. If you have hemmorhoids, well- that's different. Then he'll be seeing if he can locate the party responsible for your trouble and assess the condition of things. That is not comfy if you are having that sort of trouble. As a rule, the doctors try to be gentle and go easy as they can- they already know it's not the most popular of exams. For the most part, it's over and done with in under 10 minutes. You have a greasy backside, and will likely be given some paper to try to have a clean, possibly go to the toilet if you need to. But as far as your part of the exam, it's just remembering to try to relax - yeah, I know, easier said than done, and to bear down slightly when he tries to get in. Otherwise, you just lay there and feel squirmy. |
